We hope by sharing our journey, we can help you with yours!
Our Digest Quest began in 2015 when our daughter started kindergarten and her soiling became an issue at school. Unfortunately, the quest for an answer has been long and frustrating. We hope that by sharing our resources, and what we've learned, we can help you and your child successfully overcome school aged soiling.
Also called fecal (poo) incontinence, soiling in children occurs when the child has accidental bowel movements in their underwear. Because these bowel movements can occur at any time, it can be very embarrassing for the child and can lead to social problems. Soiling can also be frustrating for both the child and parent as they struggle to find the right treatment.
There are multiple causes of soiling, so it is important to talk with a medical professional to determine what is causing the problem in your child. One of these causes, functional constipation, is what led to the creation of Digest Quest. Functional constipation is when a child withholds their poo, which leads to a buildup of poo in their rectum. If they withhold too much, the poo becomes very hard ad the rectum can become stretched. When new, liquid poo enters the rectum, it can leak around the old, hard poo into the child's underwear, causing soiling.
The first step to help your child is to talk to a medical professional. A great place to start is with your pediatrician. Your pediatrician may be able to help your child or may want to refer you to a specialist. With functional constipation a pediatric gastroenterologist (GI) doc may be able to help. Regardless of what type of doc you see, they will likely ask you to track different variables to determine what is causing the soiling and the extent of the soiling. Our Digest Quest App can help you keep this information organized and provide insights into how to help your child.
The Digest Quest story starts with our daughter and her struggles with childhood constipation and the resulting incontinence. What was at one time an inconvenience for our family and our small, home based daycare provider, became a source of embarrassment once she started school. Because she never knew when she would have an accident, often times that accident happened at school. Fortunately, it was rare that the soiling was noticeable to her classmates, but it was still embarrassing for her. We always had to make sure she had a change of clothes and we had to get her teachers involved in helping her. As parents, we got more and more discouraged.
If you have found your way to this site, we know you have struggled, like us, with putting all the pieces together. Endless trips to doctors and therapists often led us to countless requests for tracking every aspect of our child's diet and bathroom regimen.
Quite frankly, it was exhausting. As we struggled to meet the normal demands of raising our kids, we more often than not failed at accurately tracking the long list of variables. Most days we were happy they had their shoes on when they left the house. Knowing how much fiber they had consumed, umm, yeah, we had no clue.
We knew there had to be an easier way to compile the data that our doctors requested. From those failures, Digest Quest was both. We don't support one technique over another or argue for or against one method. Those are discussions for another message board. But we do hope the information on this site, and especially our Digest Quest App, can support you on your path to a happier home and a healthier child.
